Burnout, Business Growth, and the Decisions That Change Everything
I recently had the joy of sitting down with Laura Templeton on The 30 Second Success Podcast. Laura and I also co-host the Create Connect Convert podcast alongside Kristy Crippen, so it was especially fun stepping into a different kind of conversation together. The discussion felt honest, thoughtful, and energizing in the best way, the kind of conversation that leaves you reflecting long after it ends.
We talked about business growth, burnout, confidence, decision making, and the reality of building something meaningful over time.
One of the biggest topics we explored was burnout. Years ago, I was managing social media for 12 to 15 companies at once. I loved marketing, but eventually, I hit a wall. In response, I made a quick pivot away from services and into teaching. Looking back, the shift itself was not wrong, but the transition lacked structure.
During the episode, I shared something I now say often:
You have to land the plane before you take off in a new one.
That experience taught me that the work itself was not the problem. The volume was. Returning to marketing with healthier boundaries helped me rediscover what I loved about it while also creating space to build workshops and courses in a more sustainable way.
Laura and I also discussed the importance of support systems in business. Two things changed the trajectory of my work more than almost anything else:
• Joining a mastermind group
• Having a consistent accountability partner
Those relationships helped me sharpen ideas, follow through on goals, and move projects forward that may have otherwise stayed “someday” ideas.
We also talked about a mindset that has helped me tremendously when launching something new:
V1D1: Version 1, Day 1.
So many people believe confidence comes first. In my experience, confidence is usually built through action. You start before you feel fully ready. You gather information through doing. Then you improve.
That applies to marketing, business decisions, content creation, courses, and honestly, most meaningful things in life.
The conversation also wandered into some more personal territory, including my love of reading and learning. I shared that I typically read multiple books at once across different formats and intentionally mix fiction and nonfiction because I believe creativity and analytical thinking strengthen each other.
And perhaps most importantly, we talked about specificity in business.
For years, I tried to market widely. But once I narrowed my focus to the interior design and construction industry, an industry I already deeply understood through my own background as a decorative painter and working with products brands within the field, everything became clearer. My messaging improved. My confidence improved. The right people began recognizing themselves in my work. That reminder may be one of the biggest takeaways from the conversation!
I’m grateful to Laura for creating space for such a genuine conversation, and I had a wonderful time being part of the show.
